OUR PRESIDENT KAAN'S NEW ECONOMY PROGRAM ASSESSMENTS

Our Chairman Abdurrahman Kaan evaluated Treasury and Finance Minister Berat Albayrak's statements regarding the New Economic Program (2021-2023) (NEP), prepared with the main theme of "New Balancing, New Normal, New Economy." President Kaan stated the following:

"Previous to the pandemic, we targeted 5 percent growth for 2020, but at this stage, we can now speak of a growth target of 0.3 percent. We can also evaluate the year-end inflation rate, which was targeted at 8.5 percent in the previous NEP (Republican Economic Development Plan) and revised to 10.5 percent, from the same perspective. In our opinion, these revisions are certainly not indicators of failure for the Turkish economy; they are reasonable changes consistent with market realities. Among G20 countries whose average contraction rate was 12.5 percent in the second quarter of the year, Turkey stood out positively with a 9.9 percent contraction.

A slightly positive economic growth rate in 2020, as projected in the NEP, is a plausible scenario. Thus, we can predict that the Turkish economy will not fall far short of the 5.8 percent target in 2021 due to the base effect. However, for economic growth to reach 5 percent in the ongoing period, both economic efficiency and productivity must increase." It is necessary.

All sectors affected by the global pandemic, whether positively or negatively, will need to be diversified and their sustainability ensured during crisis periods. At the same time, many threats that emerged during the pandemic should be considered temporary, and we should focus on sectors with high growth potential for the post-pandemic period rather than addressing these threats.

Here, the priority is on improving labor and raw materials. We believe that if Türkiye becomes more diligent in raw materials, it will significantly increase exports. Furthermore, if the gains obtained through incentives in our country are converted into investment and production is rapidly resumed, imports are projected to decrease, and exports will trend positively.

As MÜSİAD, we support the programs to be developed and established to synchronize investment, production, and trade. In line with developments, we aim to make a significant contribution to production by directing SMEs to incubation centers and establishing new production centers.

The 2021-2023 New Economic Program, which we see as having accurately identified the problems and put forward realistic measures, serves as a roadmap to prepare our country for 2023. The program includes: We can say that with the growth, financial stability, unemployment, current account balance, inflation and budget balance targets and the compatible monetary and fiscal policies to be implemented towards these targets, the economy will enter a period of strong growth again and Türkiye will get closer to its goals for its centennial.”
