The furniture sector is one of the oldest and most developing sectors in Turkey and is one of the leading sectors of our country in terms of industrial added value, and its contribution to the economy continues to increase as it is one of the sectors that uses domestic resources the most in exports and has the least dependence on imported products. The furniture industry has a strategic importance in our country with the "added value" it creates. The strategic importance and high employment potential of the Turkish furniture industry should be carefully considered in this respect. Since furniture is used by all world cultures in terms of its features, facilities that produce on an economic scale and at world standards have been established in the face of increasing competition in recent years and have reached a position where they sell products to the country's domestic market and the world with their dealership organizations. According to 2022 data, the furniture sector ranks fourth in the manufacturing industry with 20,867 enterprises and seventh with 165,118 jobs created. The sector; It uses inputs from wood products, textiles and steel profile sectors and has a rapidly developing sub-industry in recent years. Although the growth trend in the furniture sector, which sells 70% of its production domestically, is upward, the relatively weak course of domestic and international demand conditions in recent years prevents the sector from reaching its potential. The furniture sector, which is one of the most important sectors in Turkey in terms of employment generation capacity, operates throughout the country and is one of the sectors with the highest regional clustering. Furniture production has concentrated in Kayseri, Ankara, Bursa and Istanbul over the years, and accordingly, the furniture sub-industry, which provides input to the sector, has made investments in these cities. The improvements in the economic and social fields experienced in 2001 and afterwards, the rapid increase in the housing sector and housing projects, and the widespread use of offices have not only increased the demand for furniture, but also helped develop the demand for modern and functional furniture. It is seen that the operating profitability of the sector has maintained a certain level over the years. Although it is known that the balanced course of domestic demand supports this situation, the success of the sector in market diversification after the global crisis has been important in terms of the sustainability of the sector. The stable structure seen in profitability puts the furniture sector one step ahead when compared to other manufacturing sectors. On the other hand, the difficulties in accessing financing in small and medium-sized enterprises put the companies in question at risk during periods of economic fluctuation. The sector has the flexibility to compensate for the loss caused by the problems it may encounter in export markets with domestic demand. Even if the problems that may be experienced with neighboring countries negatively affect the sector's exports, it is thought that the sector will not have sales difficulties as long as there is no deterioration in domestic demand conditions.
The furniture sector is a net exporter.
While the use of imported inputs in final product production is quite limited, there is a dependence on imports, especially industrial wood, in the furniture sub-industry that provides intermediate goods to the sector.
· In the sector where technology and capital use are low, the increase in demand for design products in recent years has led to the use of high-tech machines in the sector. Considering that the demand for design products and functional products will increase in the coming years, it is thought that businesses with a capital-intensive structure may come to the fore in the sector. The widespread mechanization in the sector, which currently has difficulty competing with Far Eastern manufacturers, is expected to positively affect the competitiveness of the sector.
